One of the best things about herb gardening is that you don’t need a lot of space to get started. A sunny windowsill, a small balcony, or a corner of your backyard is all you need to grow fresh basil, mint, rosemary, and more. Here’s how to do it.
Choose Your Space
Herbs are incredibly adaptable. Here are three great options depending on what you have available:
- Windowsill containers: Perfect for a few pots of basil, parsley, or chives. A south-facing window with 6+ hours of light is ideal.
- Window boxes: Great for balconies or railings. You can grow 4–6 herb varieties in a single box.
- Raised beds: If you have outdoor space, a 4x4 ft raised bed gives you room to grow a full kitchen herb garden. Our Cedar Raised Garden Bed Kit is easy to assemble and naturally rot-resistant.
Pick the Right Soil
Herbs need well-draining soil — they don’t like sitting in water. Use a quality potting mix with perlite for containers, like our Premium Potting Mix. For raised beds, mix potting soil with compost for extra nutrients.
Sunlight is Everything
Most culinary herbs — basil, thyme, rosemary, oregano — need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Mint and parsley can tolerate partial shade. Position your containers or beds accordingly.
Watering Basics
The golden rule: water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Overwatering is the most common mistake with herbs. Use a gentle spray setting on your hose nozzle to avoid disturbing roots, and always ensure your containers have drainage holes.
Start with Easy Varieties
If you’re new to herb gardening, start with forgiving varieties like basil, mint, chives, and parsley. Our Organic Herb Seed Collection includes 12 varieties — all certified organic — so you can experiment and find your favourites.
With a little sunlight, good soil, and regular watering, you’ll be harvesting fresh herbs in just a few weeks. Enjoy the process! 🌿
